Most Search Engines have a function they refer to as “Safe Search” or “Family Safe” which is searches that would be suitable for any age.  They use a wide range of words related to nudity or sexual activities as well as racist, radical political or religious views to block the content or have a popup telling the user that this content is for mature audiences.

In some cases they cannot show drug or alcohol information due to country restrictions.  It is important that you understand these guidelines if you wish to target markets with these sensitivities.

If you are unsure if your content would be flagged by the adult filters Google, on their Adsense “Family Safe” guidelines page, suggests asking yourself these questions:

  1. Would I be comfortable viewing this content with my parents or children in the same room?
  2. Would I feel comfortable viewing this content if my boss walked up behind me while I had this content on my screen?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, then it is likely that some advertisers would not be comfortable showing their ads on such content and we might consider it mature.
